UNITED NATIONS PEACE CORPS
One core program of Lambda Mu Omega’s (LMO) programming is working in partnership with the Peace Corp, who’s mission is to promote world peace and friendship. The Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP) connects volunteers and their communities with the private sector in the United States and around the world to fund community-initiated projects.
Lambda Mu Omega has been recognized at the Peace Corps’ 50th Anniversary in Washington DC and has also received honors in Illinois such as a commendation certificate from Senator Carol Moseley Braun and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Central Region awards.
LMO’s Peace Corp partnership (1986-current)
The Lois Robinson International Program (LRIProgram) has focused on building educational and health related facilities in Africa. Every year the LRIProgam has donated to a project identified through the PCPP program referenced above, which has resulted in the building of schools, health clinics, libraries, computer labs, a Technical Training Institute, and a girls’ dormitory. See below for several projects we have completed since inception in 1986.
MOMBASA RELIEF INITIATIVE (MFRI)
MFRI’s mission is to serve the children of Mombasa, Kenya including two key initiatives: Health and Education. These initiatives are addressed in several programs, one of which is the Feminine Products Program.
Mombasa Partnership (2000-current):
The LRIProgram has contributed to Mombasa in support of their Feeding Program and Education programs such as My First Computer. This is an initiative that continues to build computer labs at schools schools in Mombasa, Kenya and to teach basic computer skills to over 3,000 students. Additionally, the LRIProgram participated in MFRI’s Feminine Products Program and several LMO members have personally donated significant funds to this partnership.
