Welcome to the Lois Robinson International Program

Our Mission

To implement and contribute to programs that enable and empower young women representing cultures from around the world and within the Chicagoland community. Sponsored events and programs for 2024 and 2025 include the Pathways to Purpose Program, Peace Corps projects in Africa, and the Mombasa Initiative.

In 1986, within the Lambda Mu Omega (LMO) chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., the International Program's mission has been to provide construction of schools, libraries, and computer centers, in global communities benefiting both young women and men.  The committee has collaborated with organizations such as The Peace Corps and the Mombasa Initiative to bring these projects to fruition.

Representative Projects include:

  • Classroom Construction – Ghana

  • Creating a Space for Learning (Library) – Senegal

  • Primary School Library – Zambia

Our Beginnings

Our Inspiration - International Day of the Girl

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170, declaring October 11th as the International Day of the Girl. Annually, on this special day, the United Nations commits to promoting gender equality and championing the rights and achievements of girls everywhere.

On September 2, 2022, the Chicago City Council passed a resolution officially recognizing October 11th as the Day of the Girl.
